Message from the Chairman

Established in 2010, the Department of Public Administration and Governance Studies has been regarded as the leading department in Social Science Faculty of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Trishal, Mymensingh, Bangladesh having extensive research and academic excellence. The dynamic leadership of the founding chairman-Professor Dr. Habibur Rahman and the passionate efforts of the faculties of the department helped to obtain this present stage. The department is conducting four years of BSS honors and one year MSS program following the semester system.

As an inter-disciplinary discipline, the department focuses on theory as well as practice. The core areas of the discipline in the BSS program are public administration, governance, introduction to public policy, local government, research methodology, organizational behavior, management, public financial management, banks and financial system, human resource management, innovation in public service delivery, administrative law & ethics, governance and globalization, strategic and change management, political economy, project management, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), gender & development, and environmental studies.

MSS students are required to complete the key courses such as classics in governance, development theories and administration, public policy analysis, comparative public administration, infrastructure and land administration, public-private partnerships (PPP), contemporary issues & debates on public administration, and public personnel management with analytical and practical orientation. The department pays special attention to social science research and innovation in governance as well as development. The key areas of the job field of the graduates of this department are public administration, private banks and financial institutions, human resource administration in public and private sectors, research sector, and developmental organizations.

Along with providing quality teaching and research, the department follows a collaborative approach with the relevant public, private, development organizations to equip its students with sustainable development (SD), and to avoid capacity mismatch. Therefore, the department does harness entrepreneurial and managerial spirit among the students to face uncertainties and challenges in years to come. The former students of the department have been demonstrating their potentials in different public, private, development, and multi-national organizations.

To inculcate lifelong skills and timely asked soft skills among the students, the department established the Centre for Innovation and Sustainable Development (CISD). In addition, CISD is aimed at encouraging co-curricular activities, arranging various career counseling and training sessions, promoting research and innovation for increasing employability and academic excellence of the graduates. Correspondingly, the Journal of Governance and Development, double-blind peer review academic journal, is published biannually from this department.
